NHYC ANNOUNCES RACE TO MANZANILLO
Race from Newport to Mexico and complete a Transpac requirement
A requirement for the 2027 Transpac race is to complete a passage under sail. Since the early 1970s, Newport Harbor Yacht Club has conducted the biennial Newport Beach to Cabo San Lucas International Yacht Race in advance of Transpac, and our competitors often enter this offshore race to shakedown their boats and crew and meet this requirement.
Due to congestion within the Cabo San Lucas Marina, NHYC sought an alternate location and received considerable encouragement from the hospitality team at the Las Hadas Hotel and Marina in Manzanillo, MX, who are excited to accommodate the fleet, families and friends.
The NHYC 2027 Invitational Yacht Race to Manzanillo, Mexico will start on Friday, March 5, 2027, and cover approximately 1,100 nautical miles. This race is for fully measured, ORR Class racing sailboats who will be selected by the NHYC Organizing Committee (“NHYC-OA”) through an invitation to participate. Racing sailboats with a PV or Cabo ORR rating of at least 1.01 or higher will be considered.
Local race organizers in Manzanillo are planning fleet races in advance of the Easter week holidays since so many competitive boats will be in the area. The NHYC-OA is finalizing a Notice of Race expected to be published by late October 2026 and will contain specifics concerning class rules, the start and finish location, the hospitality venue as well as marina berthing and immigration details.

TRANSPAC CHECKLIST: SAFETY AT SEA TRAINING
Complete a Transpac requirement
One of several Transpac race requirements is valid Safety at Sea training certificates for at least 60% of the crew, including the Person in Charge, Reserve Person in Charge and Watch Captains. Del Rey Yacht Club is hosting a Safety at Sea seminar on November 7-8, 2026, and it’s one of the few scheduled in Southern California before the Transpac next summer. Several Transpac racers are already registered—join them.
